Paranormal Terminology

 

Below is a list of terms to describe haunts, paranormal events, and other phenomenon. We continue to add to it and provide more educational information regularly.  


Agent

  • A Person (Living) who activity is being directed at usually from Poltergeist activity. 


Amulet

  • An object believed to protect, bring good luck to, or ward off evil for an individual. AKA "charm" or "talisman"


Anomaly

  • Irregular or unusual event that does not display standard scientific rules, laws, or theories. An event that cannot be explained.


Apparition

  • An image of a person that materializes without the presence of a physical body.


Artifact/ Artefact

  • Slight noises or residual images created from internal mechanisms of equipment that can be misinterpreted as paranormal phenomena.


Astral Body

  • The body a person utilizes during an out-of-body experience. 


Astral Plane

  • The world  believed to exist above our physical realm also referred to as the in-between. 


Astral Projection

  •  Intentionally causing the spirit to leave the body, the opposite being an out-of-body experience and occurs  involuntarily.  


Aura

  •  An invisible emanation or field of energy (Normally Electromagnetic) believed to radiate from or around a person or object. 


Automatic Writing

  • An experimental method of receiving information from disembodied spirits. Often used by mediums in which the spirit takes control over the medium. The spirit relays information through the  unconscious medium on paper without being aware of the contents. 


Case Study

  • An investigation of an individual subject or series of events that normally is in-depth and extensive. 


Channeling

  • A form or method of communication, wherein a spirit will pass information to a medium/ channeler who in-turn relays it to the receiver or listener. 


Clairalience

  •  Ones ability to experience odor or smell outside the range of normal olfactory sense. 


Clairvoyance

  • A  specific insight or form of perception that allows one to see objects, events, or spirits that cannot be intercepted by the senses. Mental imagery, intuition, or astral connection are common forms.


Communication/Contact Session

  • The time during which investigators, mediums, and clairvoyance's attempt to communicate with spirits, entities, or other beings.  


Collective Apparition

  • A type of sighting in which multiple people see the same apparition or phenomena. These types of sightings are normally rare due to people seeing or experiencing different events  at one location or haunt.


Crisis Apparition

  • This form of apparition is usually observed by a person near death. Crisis apparitions can also be viewed by individuals who "Died" and were revived by medical protocols. Also, people who are seriously ill or injured may observe these apparitions.  


Dematerialize

  • When a spirit, apparition, or spector begins to or loses its defined physical form or substance. 


Deja Vu

  • A feeling of familiarity that one has seen, experienced, or been somewhere before. 


Demon

  •  Pure evil deity or being. Capable, of violence, inducing fear, causing harm to individuals, or possessing persons amongst other abilities. Documented factual cases of demons are extremely rare and should be taken seriously. 



Dowsing Rods

  • Handheld tools made of metal or wood and are used to locate lost objects, energy fields, or to communicate with spirits or entities. This form of investigations has minimal scientific validation but cannot be ruled out as effect. 


Ectoplasms

  • A substance associated with spirit manifestations. Often photographed as fog-like mist, masses, and vortexes. 


Electromagnetic Field/ Electromagnetic Field Detector

  • Energy field surrounding all things, both natural and man-made that can or may produce a magnetic field. These fields can be observed with the EMF Detector. EMF Detectors are calibrated to show 0.0 and increase in numerical value as the magnetic field increases.


Elementals/ Earth Spirits

  • Terminology to identify natural spirits. 


Exorcism

  • The removal of a spirit, ghost, demon, that are believed to be possessing or haunting a location, person, or animal. An exorcism is normally performed by a priest or other religious leader and generally are religious in nature. The belief is the faiths higher power can banish or cast away present spirits, ghosts, or demons.


Franks Box/ Ghost Box

  •  A device used to communicate with spirits, entities, or ghosts, that uses a real time communication technique in which the ghost box scans AM/FM frequencies and the spirit uses words from those channels to speak. 


Ghost

  •  A visual form of apparition, entity, or spirit. 


Haunting

  • A Reoccurring phenomena where a spirit or ghost return to a location where no one is physically present. Ghosts general are bound to locations. 


Hellhound

  • Ghostly "devilish" dog normally thought to be a death omen. 


Intelligent Haunting

  • A haunting that normally involves the spirits, entities, or beings ability to intelligently respond through voice, noise, or touch among other forms of communication. 



Levitation

  •  The ability for a person, object, or spirit to raise itself in defiance of gravity. 


Life Review

  • The review in ones mind of  a persons life that normally occurs before death or before near death experiences. These normally occur in a flashback or reel form of review.


Marian Apparition

  •  Apparition associated with seeing the Virgin Mary. 


Materialization

  • Opposite of Dematerialization this occurs when a solid object begins to develop from thin air consisting of a mass, mist, partial or full body apparition. These are normally see through manifestations.


Medium

  •  A professional who claims to be able to communicate with spirits or entities on behalf of living persons. They claim to be able to communicate between worlds and planes. 


Mist/ Mass

  • A blanket like light that is normally seen, photographed, or videographed, that is not of normal visibility. Though interesting there is minimal scientific evidence to suggest that these mists are paranormal in nature. 


Near Death Experience

  • What is reported by people who clinically die or come close to legal death and are revived by medical countermeasures. People often report seeing dead relatives or friends, encountering with spirit guides, or religious idols, seeing white lights, having life reviews, and out-of-body experiences. Some even claim to be able to make the choice whether to go back to the earthly realm or stay. 


Orb

  • A commonly photographed anomaly. Many believe these orbs represent spirits of a deceased person. Orbs generally appear as a ball of light on film and may not be immediately observed until reviewing photos or videos. Characteristics include size, color, shape, and motion. Often there are natural explanations of these orb like sightings that can include dust, moisture, insects, lens flares and reflections. 


Ouija Board

  •  A board that normally contains printed letters, numerals, and words used to receive spirit communications. Usually a planchette (a triangular or heart-shaped pointer,) is used by people to spell out words, receive yes or no responses, or to choose numbers. Participants place their hands on the planchette and ask a question and the pointer moves to spell out the response. It is believed that the Ouija Board is a dangerous item that opens gateways or portals to the other side and has been known to bring through dark spirits and energies. The board's name is derived from the French and German words for 'yes'. 


Out of Body Experience

  • When a persons spirit travels out of the physical body and travels to a different location other than their body. Often these people claim to see their body and things happening around it from a "third person" point of view. 


Paranormal

  • Something that is beyond the normal human experience or scientific explanation. 


Parapsychology

  • Study of evidential information for psychological phenomena that are inexplicable by science. 


Percipient

  • Person who sees  an apparition. 


Poltergeist

  • Non-human spirit entity which literally means "noisy ghost." Usually malicious and destructive. Sometime can also be self induced. Traditional poltergeist activities are thumping and banging, levitation or movement of objects. 



Precognition

  • Ones ability to predict and or have knowledge of events in advance of it occurring.  


Psychokinesis

  • The ability to affect matter without physical contact with ones mind. 


Psychometry

  • Ability of divining information about people or events associated with an objects simply touching or being near to it. 


Pyrokinesis

  • Ability to unconsciously control or produce fire with their mind.


Residual Haunting

  • An event or scene that is re-enacted and is not affected by any external influences such as people or objects.


Retrocognition

  • Ability of a individual to experience past events and is able to see or describe what occurred with no prior knowledge. 


Seance

  • A gathering of people normally lead by a medium in which the medium receives and relays messages from and to the other side, spirits, or ghosts.


Sensitive

  • A person who possess extrasensory talents. 


Shadow People

  • Shadow shaped entities normally seen out of the peripheral vision. Very frequently sightings are accompanied by feelings of dread, sadness, death, and threat. 


Shaman

  • Members of tribal societies who or normally a medium between the visible world and the spirit world. Normally Shaman participate in older style rituals such as magic, sorcery, or medicine practices. Often their goal is to control natural events, produce healing, or cast out evil.


Stigmata

  • Bodily marks, sores, or sensations of pain corresponding in location to the crucifixion wounds of Christ and are explainable in nature or science. 


Supernatural

  • Opposite of paranormal, supernatural is often compared to divine or demonic interventions or events. Come belief is these occurrences happen outside of our plane and world. 


Telekinesis

  •  The abnormal movement of objects that cannot be explained scientifically.  


Teleportation

  • The ability for one to transport matter or information. It is believed the matter will dematerialize, from one place and materialize in another.  


Thought Form

  • An apparition produced from the human mind. 


Trance

  • A hypnotic, cataleptic, or ecstatic state during which a person becomes detached from their physical surroundings. 


Vortex

  • Anomaly that appears as a funnel or rope-like image in photographs. They are believed to  be ghosts or gateways to other dimensions. There is minimal scientific evidence to support these theories.  


White Noise

  • Acoustic or electrically generated noise where the frequency intensity is consistent within its band.
